The latest work from Lidia Benavides has the title Gamma and has been carried out during 2010 in the Instituto Astrofísico de Canarias. There, the artist carried out fieldwork interviewing the research personnel and making a number of visits to its telescopes in order to transfer to her plastic universe all the modernity and advances in observing the skies and investigation into cosmic rays.

In the telescopes dedicated specifically to observing the sun, those intended to capture Cherenkov radiation, and also the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC) - the biggest telescope in the world - the artist has created her own particular discourse between science fiction, expanded painting and the intermediate project in different works for video, painting, sound and digital photography.

Moreover, the spectrographs installed in the GTC are the source of a work for video in collaboration with Miguel Alvarez-Fernández. In this audiovisual work, Lidia Benavides applies the optical spectrometer, an instrument used to measure the properties of light in a certain portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, to the movement of the Gran Telescopio de Canarias by means of different video takes in their functioning and a montage for the editing which combines a world in the limit of abstraction, of the spatialization of emotions, projected to the confines of astrophysical science. In this sense, Miguel Alvarez-Fernández composes the soundtrack for the piece in direct relation with its function, by means of processes of synthesis of electronic sounds and composition by computer.
