"Gaudium Plaeni" José García Navas
4th solo exhibition of José García Navas at ASTARTÉ.

José García Navas resorts to a scattered catalogue of graphic and visual sources in his work. When you gaze out his works you notice the security of someone that knows the history of contemporary painting and resorts to a certain expressionism as well as a particular lyricism.

As Javier Maderuelo pointed out when refering to García Navas work, he builds the painting as a palimpsest in which every new brushstroke, every trace or gesture is at the same time supported and erased by the previous one, building entangled superpositions that form a weft of affirmations and negations in which the graphisms turn into textures. The apparent chaos of the strokes is supported however by structural or directional ideas that confer a constructive and spatial consistency to his work.

José García Navas [Granada, 1946]. He lives in Barcelona. Doctor of Arquitecture in 1988. He teaches at the ETSAB since 1990. He is also a Drawing teacher at the Escola ELISAVA in Barcelona [1982-85].
