Within the framework of the Interactivos?'08 - Juegos de la Visión seminar, José Luis Brea presents a reflection on the relation between
the technical format in which images are produced and the format’s
symbolic potential, with special emphasis on electronic images.
The
era of film images led to new simultaneous and collective reception,
and in the era of electronic images, that collective tendency has
extended to include production. The technical conditions in which
images are produced today have led to a series of changes as a result
of the shift from scarcity-based economies to attention and abundance
economies. Electronic images, given that they are independent of any
type of medium, take on a phantasmagorical quality which makes them
catalysts for figures of desire, and therefore, they can be used by the
experience and arts economies.
