La Casa Encendida presents Madrid's first-ever sound art exhibition. The "ART SONoro" ["SOUnd ART"] exhibition aims to offer an overview of the current situation of this artistic discipline through the work that various national and international artists have produced during the last decade. Organised by La Casa Encendida and curated by José Manuel Costa, the show will occupy several venues in the city. Although the central focus and origin of the exhibition are La Casa Encendida (exhibition spaces, terrace and transitional places), several works will also be displayed in the gardens of the Atocha Observatory at Science Hill. Furthermore, the ART SONoro OFF programme will feature the work of various young artists at different venues in Lavapiés Meanwhile, La Casa Encendida will play host to a broad programme of film and music events all connected to sound art. A detailed catalogue will be published and towards the end of the exhibition a number of workshops and encounters will be organised. The pieces presented at La Casa Encendida will include work by artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, Carsten Nicolai, Angela Bulloch, Llorenç Barber, Minoru Sato, Jason Kahn, Steve Roden, Chris Watson and José Iges / Concha Jerez.
La Casa Encendida of Obra Social Caja Madrid presents "ARTe SONoro", the first sound art exhibition ever held in Madrid. This contemporary art form is characterised by its diversity, and it is in this same spirit that La Casa Encendida will address the different activities included in the project: exhibition, performances and concerts, audiovisuals, encounters and workshops.
Sound art is simply art that sounds. In other words, it is something that attempts to communicate with audiences through auditory as well as visual means, and which therefore evolves in time. It is one of the new artistic practices that have emerged as a result of the advent of technologies such as the loudspeaker, cinema, video, digital media, etc. In this respect, it is a genuinely contemporary art ranging for example from sculptures with sound to the occupation of a space purely with sound.
EXHIBITION VENUES
LA CASA ENCENDIDA
22 April - 13 June
The works to be shown at La Casa Encendida are large-format pieces, including among others Angela Bulloch's massive "Disenchanted Forest x 1001" sculpture, two new new pieces by Ryoji Ikeda ("test pattern [n˚2]" and "the transcendental [n˚3]"), an installation by Carsten Nicolai based on his works "Anti" and "Reflex", and Minoru Sato's mute sound sculpture.
At the same time, several pieces will be shown in spaces at La Casa Encendida which are not intended for exhibition purposes but which visitors nevertheless pass through. The terrace will provide the backdrop for works by Chris Watson, Katja Kölle, Riches/Miwa and Llorenç Barber, and for the duration of ARTe SONoro it will come alive with the sound of the bells ringing out the hours from the building's old clock tower. In other spaces of La Casa Encendida, Jason Kahn will install his work on a staircase and Andrés Ramírez Gaviria will use one of the entrances to the building. Meanwhile, Ángeles Oliva and Toña Medina will offer an audio guide at different places in the building in an experiment with space and radio as an art form by stimulating only the sense of hearing.
GARDENS OF THE ATOCHA OBSERVATORY. SCIENCE HILL
22 April - 13 June
Science Hill
The gardens of the Observatory at "Science Hill" [where the former Astronomical Observatory and various research and technology centres are located] will serve as the venue for sound installations by a variety of creators: Steve Roden, a multidisciplinary artist whose work incorporates painting, drawing, sound installation and performance; Dawn Scarfe, who primarily uses resonance to create audible auras in her chosen setting; Dan Saint Claire, who focuses his work on everyday experiences with sound; the work of intermedia artists José Iges / Concha Jerez; and the Galician collective Escoitar.org, whose sound landscape helps to construct the identity of a geographical area defined by the nearby Fallen Angel sculpture.
ARTe SONoro OFF. INSTALLATIONS AND EVENTS
Installations
13 - 30 May
Events
Saturday 15; Saturday 22 and Sunday 23; Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 May
As part of the ARTe SONoro OFF sound programme, La Casa Encendida and IN-SONORA will take to the streets and venues where the cultural life of the local neighbourhood unfolds: the area between the Paseo del Prado, Atocha, Embajadores and Tirso de Molina. The programme will commence with "Cañón Acústico" led by Pablo Serret de Ena and the "Txalamobil Madrilen" by La Dinastía Trini, two itinerant communicators who when they are not out and about can be found at Espacio Espora and Pensart. We continue with the action and installation by Gabriel Castaño at El Cruce, near Alfredo Morte's motorised rtB6 bell. Waiting for us at El Carromato is Julia Varela's savage whip and Julio Adán's complex instruments.
Just around the corner, in the Plaza de los Ministriles Chica, every hour we have the chance to see 12 o´clock Shadow with its concert for eight headphones; meanwhile, Krapoola invites us to work with the objects he has accumulated and now wants to get rid of in order to storm Calle Amparo with sound. A few days later, Nilo Gallego will be waiting for us with seats for the audience in Lavapiés. To end the programme, the saxophones of Relentless will wander through the crowds in a procession from the MNCARS to the Rastro flea market and Aula 11, the venue for the last two sound and spatial improvisations - a choral performance by En Busca Del Pasto and a trio performance by O3.
PARALLEL ACTIVITIES
PERFORMANCES AND CONCERTS
La Casa Encendida
23, 24 and 25 April
We start with the sound explorers Michael Northam & Manu Holterbach, who will give their first live presentation of a collaborative project that combines instrumental technique with improvisation and field recordings. That same day, Jean François Laporte and Barbara Sarreau will perform "Mon corps ne s'arrêtera de danser," a mixture of various sound materials and dance. The Saturday programme begins with Aki Onda, a Japanese musician whose principal instrument is a walkman, and continues with Ilios, a Greek artist who uses an extraordinary palette of sounds featuring internal combustion engine vibrations, oscillators and other instruments. Sunday night kicks off with the "Labyrinthitis" concert by Jacob Kirkegaard, a Danish musician who records the earth's vibrations, ice sheet movements and the vibrations of volcanoes. We end with the "Acusmatrix" programme by Pablo Palacio and Muriel Romero, a combination of dance and sound.
ENCOUNTER
8, 9 and 10 June
The proliferation of festivals, showcases, publications, radio programmes, etc. dedicated to sound art in Spain illustrates (and simultaneously feeds) the enormous curiosity about this artistic discipline exercised not only by a growing audience but also, and most particularly, by a large group of authors from the most diverse creative fields: from musicians (both those academically trained and those associated with other forms of music) and visual artists to experimental poets, performers and artists who work with new technological media. This encounter aims to reflect that interest, to analyse how these practices have developed in Spain and to try and glimpse the form they may take in the future.
"MÁS ALLÁ DEL SONIDO" ["BEYOND SOUND"] AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAMME
La Casa Encendida
Every Wednesday in May and June
On countless occasions, listening is not only a physiological act but also a spiritual and transcendental act. "Más allá del sonido" explores different listening possibilities within the visual arts: documentary, abstraction, 3D image, found footage, minimalism, digital painting, conceptualism, etc. This programme will enable us to gain an insight into the sound and visual creation of the last ten years, works that inhabit the realm of contemporary art and sonic exploration, establishing connections between different disciplines that completely alter our notions of what constitutes music.
This multisensory experience questions our notions of what we understand by music, analyses sound in art, explores the relationship between light and sound, and invites us to engage with the physical environment through hearing, making the invisible audible.
MEZZANINE: LINE RETROSPECTIVE
La Casa Encendida
During May and June
The audiovisual work published by the LINE label explores the modern synergies between art, science and technology. Three projects presented in their entirety and backed by more than 50 artists provide us with a broad and diverse picture of the sound research conducted in the widest range of disciplines, including among others magnetism, physics, biotechnology, robotics, fluid dynamics and painting. These are works which prior to the advent of the DVD have passed through a variety of states: tactile audio installation (Camera Lucida), audiovisual performance (Colorfield Variations) and immersive space (Optofonica).
"UNE LOS PUNTOS" ["JOIN THE DOTS"], AUDIO GUIDE
La Casa Encendida
Ángeles Oliva and Toña Medina propose a sound tour through different parts of La Casa Encendida in search of new forms of experimenting with space by stimulating the sense of hearing. "Une los puntos" is an audio guide comprising pieces that have to be listened to in specific places at La Casa Encendida, indicated by circles on the floor. Every circle has a number indicating the piece to be listened to on that spot. The map accompanying the audio guide, available on request at the Information Point, shows the different listening places.
