Documenta is one of the most important modern art exhibitions on the international scene. It started in 1955 and, from 1972 onwards, it has been held every five years. In this twelfth edition, artistic director Roger M. Buergel will introduce work from the following Spanish artists: Sonia Abian, Ferrán Adriá, Ibon Aramberri, Jorge Oteiza and Íñigo Manglano-Ovalle.

This year round, the leitmotifs on which the works presented will reflect are: Is humanity able to recognise a common horizon over and above all its differences? Is art the medium through which we can reach this understanding? What do we still have to do and learn so that we can respond together, in a moral and intellectual manner, to globalisation? Is it a question of aesthetic training? What is the essence of life, once everything that does not form a substantial part of life has been taken out of the picture? Does art help us to reach what is essential to us?

The presentation of a selection of pieces by Jorge Oteiza aims to promote a rediscovery of the artist, as well as to help in contextualising modern art from an historical standpoint. In addition to Jorge Oteiza's influence on the younger generation of artists, his work is also closely connected to the first of the leitmotifs of Documenta 12: The search for a common horizon (shape) motivated by the interest in social dialogue.

Sonia Abian presents a concentration camp that merges with a love camp, thus reflecting a certain parallel. Modernity is the camp; the law has been taken away from this place, and the other camp called Love is where the last limit that can be upset is found.

Ferrán Adrià is the first chef to display his creative side as part of one of the modern art world's most innovative avant-garde events. The aim is to show that artistic intelligence does not depend on support and that, under certain circumstances, cookery can also be an art.

Ibon Aranberri presents the development of his most recent work. Along with pieces from older work he is unveiling a new project that follows the classical narrative of films, but expands to a fuller form, organising the exhibition space and rewriting the script.

Íñigo Manglano-Ovalle is participating with an installation made up of a single sculpture. The work of this artist recreates a mobile vehicle for the production of hydrogen from water, that is used to blow up balloons.

Zehar and Brumaria will take in part in the Documenta 12 magazines section, where they will talk about and reflect on 80 publications, both in paper and digital format, from all over the world, which discuss the main topics and the thesis of this edition of the event.
