The aim of The three dimensions of don Quixote Don Quixote and contemporary spanish art is by its very nature innovative: to invite twenty practicing Spanish artists, of different ages - and, therefore, from different schools and techniques - to produce a new work inspired in a given element or extract of Cervantes' immortal novel.
In accepting the challenge they are breaking the boundaries of meagre illustration, in an attempt to fix in three dimensions the incredible world of suggestions which Miguel de Cervantes describes to us in his most famous and universal novel.
The criteria used to select the artists for this exhibition means that they are undeniably representative of different generations, coming from different styles and media : Andreu Alfaro (Valencia, 1929); Eduardo Arroyo (Madrid, 1937); Rafael Canogar (Toledo, 1935); Alberto Corazón (Madrid, 1942); Martín Chirino (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1925); Susy Gómez (Pollença - Mallorca, 1964); Cristina Iglesias (San Sebastián, 1956); Carmen Laffón (Sevilla, 1934); Francisco Leiro (Cambados - Pontevedra, 1957); Eva Lootz (Viena - Austria, 1940); Julio López Hernández (Madrid, 1930); Blanca Muñoz (Madrid., 1963); Juan Navarro Baldeweg (Santander, 1939); Miquel Navarro Navarro (Mislata - Valencia, 1945); Carlos Pazos (Barcelona, 1949); Javier Pérez (Bilbao, 1968); Jaume Plensa (Barcelona, 1955); José María Sicilia (Madrid, 1954); Susana Solano (Barcelona, 1946) y Darío Villalba (San Sebastián, 1939).
The pieces produced by this original proposal will constitute a unique set of works of great interest which, both for their artistic and symbolic value, will be deserving of a place in the collections of the most important contemporary art museums and institutions.
